Case studies
SumNet routinely works on a variety of special projects for our clients. These help us understand our clients’ needs and refine our system. Each business operating and systems environment is different, and our challenge is to deliver a solution that makes the client’s business more efficient, user-friendly, and cost effective. Listed to the left is a sampling of projects we have undertaken to meet these challenges.
Many of the enhancements we have added over the years began with one of our clients asking us "wouldn’t it be nice if...?". We will work to help you find a better, faster, cost-effective solution. Call us and ask your question.

Global Information Distribution
Challenge: A major global investment bank needed to coordinate the distribution of equity research from offices in New York, London, and Hong Kong. Specifications included the need for an automatic system with minimal human intervention, and the ability to transfer files for both fax and email via FTP (file transfer protocol) to a central location.Solution: SumNet’s developers designed a custom server application, which allowed the research analysts worldwide to automatically transmit files for mass distribution via facsimile or e-mail.

Automated alert system
Challenge: A major global investment bank wanted a system to automatically notify clients globally of new research and related market-driven trading opportunities. The recipients included fixed sites and networks of mobile devices and Personal Digital Assistants.Solution: We established a seamless interface with the company’s existing internal system that was transparent to the company’s existing operations and clients and compliant with their procedures. The system automatically created and transmitted alerts to all recipients in a variety of formats with attachments, personalized text messages, and hyperlinks to the client’s web site.

HTML Formatting & Reporting
Challenge: An equity research area of a global financial institution needed to create and distribute reports in HTML format and to meet management’s challenge for readership metrics.Solution: SumNet’s developers designed easy to use templates that allowed the equity analysts to create research simultaneously in HTML, pdf, and text formats. The templates ensured uniformity of design to comply with internal standards and enhance brand identity. The system provided an easy to use web interface and important tracking information including:
- How many emails were sent
- How many emails and linked documents were opened
- When individual recipients opened their emails and linked documents
- Which emails were bounced back

Research Creation & Distribution
Challenge: A major international investment bank was seeking an alternative to printing and mailing hard copy research to thousands of clients. The existing process was incurring excessive production, distribution, and labor costs; prone to delay and error due to manual handling; and verging on non-functional.Solution: Our development team implemented an interface between the bank and SumNet’s e-mail broadcast system, allowing the bank to transmit research in PDF format to its client base. Our client realized substantial savings in research distribution costs, greater control, headcount reduction, and immediate delivery.

Confidential Statement Delivery
Challenge: The Capital Markets area of a global investment bank needed to transmit highly confidential client-specific portfolio statements to hundreds of clients on a weekly basis.Solution: Working with the bank’s developers, we designed and implemented an application to capture client-specific data from the bank’s internal database, and transmit it to our system in encrypted form for broadcast via facsimile and e-mail. Extensive crosschecking controls were added to ensure data integrity and confidentiality.
